The battle lines are drawn. That’s right, the twin titans of video-game football are going head to head this month to win the hearts and hardearned cash of the nation’s gamers.

Both Fifa 09 and PES 2009 are superb soccer sims, but which you prefer will depend on how you like to play. First up is Fifa, which can’t be beaten for realism, from players that look like who they’re supposed to be to the spot-on depiction of how they move. Even more impressive is the thought that has gone into the gameplay details, from zillions of modes to slick controls. It’s tough, but totally rewarding.

The latest instalment of PES is a mighty fine game, too. Fifa 09 has the photofinish realism, but PES has sheer playability on its side, and fans of the series will love both the smart AI and tarted-up online options. On paper, PES might offer less glamour and big-name features than its rival, but it’s a fabulously addictive title that many will enjoy more than the slightly more po-faced action on offer in Fifa. But whichever you plump for, both are excellent in their own right.

UK REVIEW--It has been a busy 12 months for EA Sports and football games. FIFA 08 was a genuine revolution for the series, with a more realistic pace and improved AI adding some much-needed depth to the gameplay. UEFA Euro 2008 came six months later, further refining this groundwork while expanding the features list with more unique game modes. With FIFA 09--the third EA Sports football game in a bit more than a year--the developers have honed the core gameplay even further and added even more features, game modes, and online elements to the mix. It amounts to an incredibly deep and varied package, and despite a few niggling bugs and performance issues, FIFA 09 is the pinnacle of the series so far.

Given the six-month period of time between Euro 2008 and FIFA 09, it's no surprise that the two games play similarly. However, the pace has quickened slightly, passes need to be directed with even greater accuracy, and the referees seem even more eager to dish out cards. The most noticeable improvement is in the physical quality of the players. Attackers point to where they want the ball, defenders direct offside violations to the linesmen, and everyone has lost that plastic look from FIFA 08 that was so off-putting. Although you can still spot individual animation routines during replays, the players now feel as if they're interacting with one another and the ball. As a result, player weight and speed are now a vital part of overall tactics, and combining runs with perfectly timed passes has become the only way to succeed.

With opponent AI that absolutely will not stop until it gets the ball from you, FIFA 09 is now firmly rooted in simulation territory. Experienced players can still use the left-trigger-enabled trick system to run around players, but unless you're passing the ball around effectively, you have little hope of keeping possession. The result is a game that's heavy on midfield battles--even the commentators remark on how often possession moves between teams. The AI is particularly good even on the easier settings, not only moving in to take the ball off you, but springing offside traps and adapting their tactics throughout each match. This punishing difficulty forces you to up your game, and you soon start to develop a rhythm and accuracy that can cut through defenses to score some spectacular goals. Only the odd AI mistake from your own team conspires against you, with goalkeepers running to punch a ball that's flying well wide of the goal or the computer selecting the wrong defender for you when the other team is on a break.

Adding to the deep and rewarding gameplay is a wealth of new and existing game modes. The new cover feature is Be a Pro: Seasons, which expands last year's BAP mode to cover a full four seasons. In Be a Pro, you control a single real-world player or a custom character instead of an entire team and then craft the career of that player for both club and country over four years. You still have to focus on winning games, but each match carries additional criteria, such as making a certain number of passes, tackles, or goals, which add to your overall experience points. If you're a fan of a certain player, it's great to step into his boots, but Be a Pro is most addictive when you spend time customising your own footballer and putting your name on the back of a shirt. With tactical changes and substitutions happening automatically, the emphasis is on your being the player, and your ultimate aim across the four-year career is to stay in the A-squad and earn the captaincy of your national team. If you get bored of playing as just one player or want to mix things up a bit, then you can opt to control the entire team, and friends can jump in and out as other players if you want support. Be a Pro is worth checking out if you want to see the game in a different light, but even in attacking positions, you'll spend a lot of time waiting for some action.

Be a Pro really comes into its own when played online. Up to 20 people can join in a single game, and the same passing/tackling/position/goal reward system means you're encouraged to play as part of a team. Be a Pro online is technically well implemented too, with a diplomatic lobby system that lets people jump in and select the position they want to play; the first people to ready up are awarded the captaincy and thus can control the tactics and options for the entire team. The lag is less of a problem on the PS3 than it is on the Xbox 360, but it's still prone to some slowdown on occasion. The number of shouting voices can sometimes make it difficult to communicate, but on the whole it's well implemented and is a huge amount of fun to play.

New online features aren't limited to 10-vs-10 in FIFA 09. The game also incorporates the Adidas Live Season--similar to a feature in this year's NBA Live--whereby real-world stats updates are sent to your console on a weekly basis. The game comes bundled with an access code for one free English, German, Spanish, French, Mexican, or Italian premier league, whereas additional leagues can be purchased either individually or as a set. The stats updates change the ratings of players in the game, so if someone is doing well in real life, he'll become better in the game. However, it also works the other way round, and injuries lower the stats considerably for the period of time that the player's not playing in real life. It's an expensive feature if you want updates to all of the leagues, and it expires in May 2009, but if you're a fan, it definitely adds a bit of drama to your FIFA season.

The final major addition to the game is the new custom-tactics feature, which lets you get in-depth with the behaviour of individual teams. You can adjust 11 different factors for each team, including positioning and aggressiveness, and then map your tactics to the D pad to activate during a game. What's more, you can upload these tactics to your online FIFA 09 Locker, which lets other people download and rate what you've come up with. There are 28 slots in total, and you can download other users' data and save it to your storage device. That said, the standard configurations that EA has programmed already mirror the playing style of most major teams; Arsenal have a characteristically offensive style, whereas Manchester United tend to push up from the midfield.

Although FIFA 09 offers a lot of new features, the game is still full of existing content from previous games. There are lots of offline game types, such as the Manager mode, which concerns you with transfers and training, and the Lounge mode, which lets you and your friends mess around to create scenarios and challenges. Then there are the online modes, which are comprehensive to say the least. The Interactive League lets you represent your favourite club online against supporters of other teams, with overall rankings tracking each team's progress around the world. There's also a new FIFA 09 Clubs mode where you create your own team and try to recruit your friends to play alongside you. In addition to the standard ranked and unranked games, you can join lobbies to chat with other people before taking games at your leisure, or you can create custom leagues for up to 31 other players to play against. The only sore point is the slowdown that permeates some games, especially since quitting out of a particularly laggy match results in your conceding it.

PES vs Fifa 09: Clash of the consoles

Two football titans are in a pitched battle at the top of the table - but it's not Man U against Chelsea, it's the clash of the latest console titles. Jack Riley kicks off
Liverpool versus Manchester United. Inter versus AC Milan. Football is dominated by bitter rivalries, and now a new war is being waged for the hearts of supporters everywhere. It's not between teams, but between football videogames.

The two contenders are Fifa 09, fully licensed and developed by a team of 25 self-confessed football nuts of different nationalities, and Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 (PES), the work of the visionary Japanese designer Shingo "Seabass" Takatsuka. This year, it seems, the free time of the average football fan is in more danger of evaporating into thin air than ever before.

The stakes are enormous. Last year's edition of Fifa garnered a million sales in the UK alone; that's one copy sold for every 60 people in the country. Coupled with the high price tag (both games have a top price of £49.99 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions), and the vast sums this year's big releases stand to earn for their publishers, the rewards dwarf the takings of many blockbuster movies.

Football games are a cultural phenomenon that has spread to almost every household and students' hall of residence in the country, with dedicated fan clubs, websites, online ranking tables and their own, highly lucrative, competitions. Last year's release of PES saw a tournament sponsored to the tune of £50,000, with the final held at Wembley Stadium. When one entrant was caught cheating, he was exposed to the obloquy of the entire games-industry media. Given the prize on offer, you can understand why he went to the effort.

Given the size of the market, the competition between the two games is no surprise. Each game's supporters have just as many slurs and stereotypes for each other as those of any real footballing rivalry. PES fans deride their Fifa counterparts for Fifa's reliance on official licensing rather than gameplay, but in recent years the gap has narrowed to the point where the ideological differences between the two games come down to brains versus brawn.

"Pro Evolution Soccer has been the footballer's game for almost a decade," says Tom Bramwell, editor of the gaming website Eurogamer. "Fifa was flashy and official but lightweight on the pitch, where it lacked depth and could be exploited easily. PES rewarded real-life tactics and got increasingly better at it year on year."

This is the sixth year of the argument, which kicked off when the first edition of PES took on Fifa Football 2002. Fifa was already an established brand, with the developers EA having gained the licence to use official shirts and team names nine years earlier, for Fifa International Soccer in 1993. But PES quickly gained popularity despite some bizarre team names designed to circumvent the licensing ban (Manchester United were known as Aragon). Since then, the clash has gone global, with this year's Fifa available in 17 languages and sold in 37 countries. PES is called Winning Eleven in the USA and Japan, and has localised versions for release sround the world.

Fifa's advantage in its licensing agreement is immense. The deal it signed with FIFpro, the global player-registration system for football's world governing body, means that any gamer looking for the most authentic-looking experience will plump for the EA title, which contains accurate details of players from 30 leagues and 41 national sides. PES has only managed to sign deals with the Champions League and a handful of big clubs such as Manchester United and Liverpool. More details are being added as licenses are acquired, but it is likely you will always need Fifa to play accurately – unless you're happy to play as North London (that's Arsenal on PES).

As a result, Fifa has edged out PES, in the UK at least, for the last two years in terms of sales. PES takes the lion's share of the plaudits from football purists, but this seems to have had a limited impact on sales; in 2007, Fifa sold 600,000 more copies than Konami's PES. This year, new features in Fifa have helped it win over the majority of games reviewers for the first time. But then, in PES's opening week, it knocked Fifa off the top spot of the UK games charts, hinting at a comeback by the Japanese competitor.

The competition has driven both teams of developers to focus on adding features. Improved online play is the Dimitar Berbatov of each game's summer signings; being able to have a virtual kickabout without leaving the house is attractive to couch potatoes everywhere. "Both games now take the online community aspect of gaming very seriously," says Gavin Ogden, editor of Computer and Video Games. "Playing in online leagues and being able to download stats that affect your single-player game is a great feature."

Still, the reviewers have sided with Fifa; this year's edition of PES is "ugly, with rigid, grid-based player movements and relatively limited tactical range", according to Bramwell, while Fifa is "so fluid and receptive to proper tactics that the developers seemingly had to rein it in by making it easier to shoulder people off the ball, lest they run away with it every time."

So battle is joined – and the real winners are surely gamers themselves, with a choice of two top-class simulations. But which will lift the winner's trophy?

The beautiful game: Can virtual beat reality?

The relationship between football and football gaming is a strained one. West Ham goalkeeper Robert Green has gone so far as to blame England's recent lack of international success on console gaming, while Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has lamented the perceived decline of youth football, claiming "it seems football cannot compete with an Xbox". In contrast, England captain John Terry has attributed the recent international success of Theo Walcott to sessions on 'Pro Evolution Soccer' and 'Fifa'. To investigate for myself, I invited round a group of football-playing gamer friends. First, we played 'PES 2009' and 'Fifa 09' – while the former had the edge in terms of thrills and fast-paced gameplay, EA's title proved the more realistic and tactically oriented depiction of football. Then we headed to a park to take part in the beautiful game for real.

Having divided up into teams according to preferences for the two games, it soon became clear that the 'Fifa' fans had the advantage, moving the ball around with tactical zeal on their way to victory. So which incarnation was the winner? We agreed that there's a time and a place for both real life and virtual football. Perhaps England's miserable weather, along with the rise of the football game, is to blame for the decline of the kickabout; but with a little luck, perhaps games such as 'Fifa 09' and 'PES 2009' can keep our footballing spirit alive until spring brings the sun back out to play.

FIFA 09 is the latest installment of Electronic Arts' FIFA Series of football video games. Developed by EA Canada, it is published by Electronic Arts worldwide under the EA Sports label. It was released on 2 October 2008 in Australia, 3 October 2008 in Europe and 14 October in North America.^[3] The N-Gage version was released on 18 November 2008.^[4]^[5]

The demo was released on 10 September for PC^[6] and on 11 September for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.^[7]^[8] The PS3 and Xbox 360 demos were identical with the exception of the stadium used with the PS3 featuring the FIWC Stadium and the Xbox 360 version using the new Wembley Stadium.

There are different covers for the regional versions of FIFA 09. All covers feature Ronaldinho with different players for each region: North America version features Guillermo Ochoa and Maurice Edu, German cover features Kevin Kurányi, Italian cover features Daniele De Rossi, Irish cover features Richard Dunne, French cover features Franck Ribéry, and Karim Benzema, Hungarian cover features Balázs Dzsudzsák, Portuguese cover features Ricardo Quaresma, Spanish cover features Gonzalo Higuaín, Swiss cover features Tranquillo Barnetta and UK and Australian covers feature Wayne Rooney. After the North America cover had already been revealed, Maurice Edu signed for Scottish team Rangers F.C. and this caused the cover to be altered to feature Edu in a US National Team shirt and Ronaldinho is changed to wearing his Milan shirt, so that a club shirt was featured.^[9]
